Marci Walters Featured in Voyage Houston: Meet the Senior Care Consultant Behind iworkwithmarci.com

We are proud to share that Marci Walters was recently featured in Voyage Houston, a publication dedicated to highlighting the most inspiring stories and hidden gems across the city. The interview offers a rare, personal look at the journey behind iworkwithmarci.com — from Marci's roots on Long Island to her decade-long career in Houston's senior living industry.

"Today we'd like to introduce you to Marci Walters." — Voyage Houston

From Long Island to Houston: Marci's Story

Marci is originally from Long Island, New York, and moved to Houston from Boston about 15 years ago. She studied at the University of Hartford, where she completed her senior internship at a skilled nursing community in Connecticut — an experience that planted the seeds for a career in senior care. After graduating with a bachelor's degree in psychology, she spent 15 years in semiconductor sales at Arrow Electronics, a Fortune 500 company.

After her second daughter was born, Marci temporarily stepped back from her career to focus on her family. When her children grew older and Houston had become home, it was time to return to work — and senior living called her back.

Building a Career in Senior Living

Marci's re-entry into the workforce started with a part-time weekend sales role at a local senior living community, recommended by a friend who served as CFO there. That part-time role quickly became full-time, and she went on to serve as Director of Business Development and later Director of Sales and Marketing at several Houston-area communities.

After about ten years working inside communities, Marci was approached by a referral agency — and everything clicked. Her insider knowledge of how communities operate, what families need, and how to navigate the complex healthcare system made her uniquely positioned to serve as an independent placement consultant.

"So instead of one community I can sell all of them. After she shut down about a year later it was time I started my own business."

The Challenges of Working at End of Life

In the interview, Marci speaks candidly about the emotional weight of her work:

"It's never a smooth road but that's what makes my own business exciting and challenging. It's a tough 'business' because you're dealing with people at end of life. Not as 'sexy' as beginning of life so to speak. They are trying to get through a healthcare system that is private, complicated, and run by insurance companies."

She also identifies one of the most persistent challenges she sees: families who are simply unprepared.

"I would say the biggest challenge is how unprepared people can be for getting older. They have no plan in place. For this I believe there need to be family discussions prior to a crisis."

What Sets Marci Apart

Marci describes herself as a concierge placement finder — someone who goes far beyond simply matching a senior to a community. She can refer families to movers, hospice providers, and virtually any senior-related service in the Houston area.

What truly distinguishes her, she explains, is her experience working inside communities — understanding the culture, the staffing, the operations — combined with the fact that she is not a franchise.

"I place people in the right community, not the community that compensates me the best. It evens out in the end."

The Values That Drive Her Success

When asked what quality she most attributes to her success, Marci's answer is rooted in respect and integrity:

"How I treat others in the industry — always with respect — doesn't matter who it is. The caretakers, servers, maintenance, cleaners — nobody is better than anyone else. They are the most important people in the community. They do all the work."

She also credits tenacity, honesty, and a willingness to listen:

"I've always been told through my career that I'm tenacious. Never give up. Right is right, period."
"Tell the truth upfront. The one hour it takes to do it right upfront saves time and trust in the five hours it takes you to fix it."
"I'm a big gabber but the sales rule is 80/20 — 80% listening, 20% talking."
